Consideration is given briefly, first to the role of epidemiological methods in further elucidating causal factors for the highly prevalent chronic diseases of our time, and to the need to evaluate the effectiveness of preventive measures; and secondly, to some of the approaches available for use in looking at the efficacy of our health services and comprehensive medical care programmes, emphasizing the need for an interdisciplinary approach. Beyond looking at disease and services for the diseased, we who are working in the field of public health need to develop a serious concern for improving the quality of human life, which is ever more threatened by increasing urbanization, and we shall need to work closer with research workers in town planning, government and other fields in pursuit of our goals. The prospects for research in community health are challenging, the methods are already well developed: let us start producing results.
