An Italian migrant, a plasterer, was admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a history of abdominal pains and a provisional diagnosis, from his general practitioner, of duodenal ulcer. Analysis of his blood and urine indicated lead intoxication. The Occupational Health Branch of the Public Health Department traced the source of lead to an old bath‐tub in which grapes had been crushed to make wine. The importance of accurate and detailed history taking is stressed, and the possible need for inquiry into social and environmental factors borne in mind, especially with the influx of migrants with different cooking, drinking and eating habits.
