This paper reports the results of a study of 1,328 women treated with chlormadinone acetate 0·5 mg, for a total of 7,002 patient lunar months as an oral contraceptive for continuous use. Ten pregnancies have resulted (five in patients who had not omitted any tablets) which gives a total Pearl's index of 1·7 and a Pearl's index (method failure) of 0·85. Cycle control’ with the preparation is reasonably good. The preparation is extremely well tolerated and appears to exert little or no effect on the results of normal laboratory investigations. Examination of endometrial biopsies from patients treated for periods of up to three years shows little change from the normal pattern. No long‐term effect on fertility is produced. Teratological studies have demonstrated no significant effect of the drug on the fœtus.
