A wide variety of clinical conditions resulting from arterial injury, stenosis, or dilatation can now be successfully treated by direct arterial surgery. The factors governing the successful use of vascular implants for arterial Injury or disease have been surveyed. In the case of arterial injury, earlier intervention by the surgeon who deals with limb trauma is recommended, without awaiting the disappearance of so‐called “traumatic arterial spasm”. The scope of implant surgery for arterial diseases is reviewed, including the indications for direct surgery in occlusive disease of the limbs, and in visceral artery stenosis. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a further condition in which there are strong indications for replacement with a prosthetic implant.
