In 30% of cases in this series, the patient with bladder cancer presented with symptoms which could be ascribed to cystitis in the female or to prostatism or prostatocystitis in the male, associated in some cases with occasional hæmaturia. Because, in both sexes, the symptoms of disturbance of bladder function predominate over the hæmaturia itself, minor hæmaturia is likely to be overlooked, and consequently the diagnosis of the underlying carcinoma of the bladder may be delayed, with resulting deterioration in prognosis. It is suggested that patients with disturbed bladder function should be investigated to exclude bladder cancer as, if discovered late, the prognosis is hopeless.
