It has been assumed that complete dislocation of the lower cervical vertebrae is invariably fatal, as the associated crushing of the cord is believed to be incompatible with life. F. Steinmann {Arch. f. klin. ChirBerlin,^ Bd. lxxviii. Heft 4) has gone through the literature, and has found that a not inconsiderable number of cases are recorded in which recovery took place; and he has personally observed a case in which the diagnosis was established by X-ray photographs.
