This bill is in line with the general medical view in the United Kingdom that renal transplantation is a soundly based procedure with a reasonable prognosis, whereas for the present, heart transplantation--even when successfulwould appear to be a desperate measure employed in a desperate situation at tremendous expense for only a small gain to the patient. It should offer a salutary reminder of the greater importance of preventive and rehabilitative measures in ischremic heart disease, the latter highlighted by the medical advice given to two recent United States Presidents concerning their fitness to return to the White House despite previous cardiac infarcts.
