caecal fossa was found to lead into another large sac behind the ascending colon to the right of the ascending mesocolon, corresponding exactly to the situation on the left side. This was also closed. The foramen of Winslow appeared to be much wider than usual, but no paraduodenal fossa was detected. The abdomen was closed in layers without drainage. The patient made a good recovery from the operation, which was marred only by a slight collapse of the lower lobe of the left lung. He was discharged from hospital on April 6, the eleventh day after operation. He has remained well since.
