Not only is the sexual mechanism described in a wide variety of multicellular organisms from Drosophila to man, but this volume also contains a full account of the various types of recombination to be found in microorganisms. Of particular relevance to medical practitioners will be the sections on mosaicism, sex-chromosome abnormalities in man and intersexuality. The final chapter consists of very interesting speculations concerning the evolution of sexdetermining mechanisms. It is salutary to reflect that the system which applies to Homo sapiens is only one of many that are possible, and, to judge by the many aberrations that exist, it is not necessarily the most efficient one. The book is well produced, and there are very few misprints.
