Pellagra is the disease which students learn is characterized by dermatitis, diarrhoea and dementia. In the southern States of the U.S.A. at the beginning of the twentieth century, it was endemic in mental and prison institutions, and in the poor people living in the cotton-growing districts and villages of the Mississippi and its tributaries. It showed a marked tendency to recur in epidemics during the spring and early summer.
