The pathways of metabolism of penicillin are complex, but some 20% to 40% of the total administered oral dose of penicillin V is excreted unchanged by the kidney in a period of five hours (McCarthy and Finland, 1960). Of the remainder, some passes into the liver and is metabolized and conjugated, some passes into the gastrointestinal secretions and is oxidized locally by enzymes of "resistant flora" and some enters other areas in smaller concentrations-that is, the saliva, the bronchial secretions, and the cerebro-spinal fluid.
