The metabolism of organic iodide is the key to thyroid function in all conditions; this is fully dealt with. This, of course, depends largely on the intake and excretion of iodide, and each of these topics is the subject of a chapter. Intake is extremely difficult to estimate, and the authors give examples of errors they have made, obtaining figures that, in relation to iodide excretion, were obviously too high. The commonest source of error in estimating intake is the values taken for the iodide content of foods, which vary widely according to the iodide content of soils.
