THE group of diseases comprising bronchitis, asthma and emphysema has been described as "chronic non-specific respiratory disease". It would be true to say that there is a somewhat confused state of terminology relating to this group of diseases. Two papers have recently appeared, both by C. M. Fletcher, N. L. Jones, B. Burrows and A. H. Niden,'.2 comprising a standardized comparative study between American emphysema and British bronchitis. Detailed comparison is made between the patients attending a "bronchitis" clinic in London and those attending an "emphysema" clinic in Chicago. The results of this standardized clinical and physiological comparison show that there is indeed little difference between the clinical and laboratory features of British "chronic bronchitis" and American "emphysema".
