However, Plum and his colleagues point out that their current good results may only reflect the rarity of the problem, since the number of patients admitted to their unit after a severe anoxic episode has been small. Once delayed neurological deterioration has occurred, treatment is necessarily expectant. It is considered unlikely that oxygen therapy is of any value, unless indicated for pneumonia or other complications. Sedation is given where necessary, and patients are kept in bed until there is no evidence of further neurological deterioration.
