It is suggested that all patients, before going on longterm chloroquine therapy, should undergo ophthalmological examination including tests of visual acuity, visual field and colour vision and fundus photography, if possible. At the first sign of field loss, macular change, contraction of vessels or drop in visual acuity anti-malarial therapy should be stopped.· The tragedy and liability come from failure to recognize the cause of the visual defect with consequent failure to discontinue the drug.
