IN 1807 Bozzinin first employed the principle of refiected light in the design of the oral speculum. Voltolini carried out the first rhinoscopy in 1860, using a mirror attached to the end of a long speculum. Kussmaul, with great wisdom, chose a professional sword swallower as a willing subject for his first attempts at gastroscopy in 1868. However, at this stage no lens system was used, and in the early years progress was largely dependent 011 improvement of illumination. Nitze, in 1879, introduced a new epoch by developing a cystoscope with a lens system in conjunction with internal illumination (Bozzini et alii, cited by Benedict, 1939, and Mettler and Mettler, 1947). Now 83 years later we are able to exploit our most recent medium of communication-namely, television-in the service of endoscopy.
