THill first chapter in this book traces the development of our knowledge of pyelonephritis, from the realization by Wilson and Schloss in 1929 that "pyelitis" as such did not exist, to the present concepts of ascending urinary tract and blood-borne infections, with their sequelre of renal damage and even hypertension. Colby points out the insidious progress of the chronic infection, and stresses the necessity for repeated cultures and examinations of the stained sediment of urine. Short chapters then follow on the embryology, anatomy and physiology of the kidney and on the incidence of pyelonephritis, which has been shown at the Massachusetts General Hospital to average six cases per thousand admissions over the past 10 years.
