Unsuspected Carcinoma of Prostate. W. C. BAUER, M. H. MCGAVRAN AND M. R. CARLIN (Cancer, March-April, 1960) report the discovery of 55 examples of Unsuspected carcinoma in 847 consecutive suprapubic prostatectomy specimens. All 55 patients have been followed for a minimum of five years. The crude five-year survival rate was 54%. Twenty-four of the patients were followed for 10 years and the survival rate in this group was 37%. The five-year and ten-year survival rates for patients with well differentiated cancers were 75% and 47% respectively. The .same survival rates for those with less than well differentiated cancers were 33% and 14%· respectively. The survival rates did not seem to be affected in either group by castration or oestrogen therapy. Therefore the authors suggest that in patients with moderately or poorly differentiated carcinoma discovered after suprapubic prostatectomy a second radical prostatectomy may be a rational approach.
