It will not, therefore, bepossibleto apply the Greville formula to the ratesfor thehigheragegroups. An alternativeprocedure mustbefound. This is alreadyavailablein themethodadopted for the agegroupseighty-five yearsandupwardsin the compilation of the1949UnitedStatesAbridgedLife Tables,equation(25). There are disadvantagesin the use of this equation, since the comasvalue is affectednot only by changesin mortality but by changesin the age distribution of the population within the agegroupas well. However, theeffect on themeanexpectation of life of theerrorresultingfrom theuseof theequationis slight, and there appearsto be little reason to seek an alternative methodof estimatingthe meanexpectationof life at the ageof eighty-five yearsand hencethe coL'5 value. Another possibility is to use the mean expectationof life at eighty-five years as shownin the latestofficial life tables,a procedurewhich may be justified on the groundthat changesin the mortality experience in the higher agegroupsarenot usually very great, evenover a lengthy period of time.
