of knowledgepresented. The book itself is divided!into two parts. The first, dealing with problems of deVel!ment. is almost twice the size of the second portion, whic covers the social aspect of child health. ProfessorEll himself writes eight chapterson such subfectsas "The Ne Born", "Feeding and Nutrition", "Puberty", "Infant ttrtallty", "Infant Welfare Schools", "Medical Services" and 'Nursery SChools". Whilst these articles cover ground mor or less familiar to prediatriciansand are a good summaryof modern ideas,a few commentsmay be made. In regardto セ ィ ・ newborn more attention might well be given to care of the premature infant. The subject of infant feeding, both natural and artificial, is admirably covered. The claims of Waller that by instituting massage of the breasts and expression of secretion during the iatter months of pregnancythere was a significant diminution of !engorgement, and that 83% of the instructed mothers ウ オ セ 」 ・ ウ ウ ヲ オ ャ ャ y breastfed their infants for six monthscomparedtith only 42% in a controlled group, are ,of interest. It is, [however, insufficiently stressedthat even a failing breastst\pply can often be restored by suitable methods オ ョ 、 ・ イ エ 。 セ ョ in a residentialmothercrafthospital. In the chapter o ョ セ 。 イ エ ゥ ヲ ゥ c ゥ 。 ャ feeding it is somewhatsurprising to read on page 105 that in estimatingthe caloric requirementsof the baby, t e use of the expectedrather than the actual weight is not preferred. In this regard also mention might have been Imade of Grover Powers's contribution to this sometimes!unnecessarily complicated subject in analysing successful, artificial mixtures on a caloric percentagebasis, rather than by the gravimetric scale. It seems surprising that tfis more sensibleand accuratemethod has not by now repaced the older one. ProfessorEllis's remaining c.ontributio on the social side of child health gives a useful account0 English practices. In the historical accountof infant welfare work referencemight ,have beenmadeto the pioneeringlof Truby King, which though mainly antipodean, had ウ ッ ュ セ bearing on developmentsin other parts of the world. A c£Pteron nursery schools is a welcome addition, but it s hardly comprehensiveenough, andmore detailsof layout, e uipment and methodsof running might well be included. '
