adipose tissue, the consequent cedema of engorgement and the serous infiltration of the fat-cells as the chief causes of the atrophy of fat. The venous and capillary injection accounts, in his opinion, for the brown colour of the atrophied fatty tissue. In atrophy the contour of the fat-cells is distorted, owing to shrinkage, while the developing" fat-cells have a smooth outline. Whenever an accumulation of fat is taking place in adipose tissue, large numbers of mast-cells make their appearance in the tissue. Nile-blue is a verv snitable stain for the study of both fat-cells and mast-cella.
