The following article deals with W. Bang’s attempts to give an etymology of an assumed Qoman *kar ~ kär balık „sturgeon” to which he traces back a name of the Sea of Azov given in the „Chiliads” by Tzétzis. The author of the present article explains *kar ~ kär balık as a language taboo and gives an equivalent to this from Yakut (xatïïs „sturgeon”).
