TEXTING CULTURE DAN PERILAKU EMPATI DI ERA MEDIA BARU: MEMAHAMI EKSPRESI BELASUNGKAWA DI WHATSAPP

WhatsApp telah melahirkan budaya spesifik untuk mengekspresikan belasungkawa berbasis teks, grafis, dan semacamnya sehingga perilaku empati mengalami transformasi akibat pengaruh teknologi, khususnya dalam konteks masyarakat Indonesia kontemporer. Dengan menggunakan metode studi kasus, data diperoleh dengan cara survei dan wawancara pada 130 orang informan. Hasil penelitian menyatakan belasungkawa di WhatsApp sebagai bagian dari texting culture telah berakibat pada transformasi perilaku empati karena tidak merepresentasikan aspek psikomotik sebagai salah satu aspek perilaku empati. Namun demikian, ekspresi ini tetap memperlihatkan signifikansinya sebagai bentuk ikatan sosial, terlebih dalam konteks budaya media.  WhatsApp has emerged a specific culture to express condolences based on text, graphics, etc. so that empathy behavior undergoes a transformation due to technology, particularly in contemporary Indonesian society. Utilizing case study, data were obtained by survey and interview with 130 informants. Based on the data, it can be seen that the expression of condolence on WhatsApp as a part of texting culture has transformed the empathy behavior since it does not represent the psychomotoric aspect of empathy behavior. However, this expression still shows its significance as a form of social cohesion, especially in the context of media culture.
