Preparedness of future medical personnel to support women with stress urinary incontinence: knowledge of absorbent products and important factors to consider in choosing these products

Background: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a chronic disease and a serious health problem in modernsociety.Aim of the study: The present study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge among students graduatingfrom medical faculties regarding absorbent products for women suffering from SUI.Material and methods: The study involved 1,581 participants who were students in the final year of theirmedical studies attending several different universities. The author’s survey was used for the research. Thechi2 test was used for analysis. Differences with a P-value of<0.05 were considered statistically signicant.Results: Approximately 72% of nursing and midwifery students were familiar with absorbent products availableon the Polish market used in cases of urinary incontinence, compared to about 54% of physiotherapystudents and 35% of medical students. Approximately 77% of nursing and midwifery students were able toindicate which factors are important when selecting products for women suffering from SUI. About 55% offuture physicians were knowledgeable about this subject and only 0.7% of physiotherapy students.Conclusions: The group of nursing and midwifery students had the best level of knowledge necessary to assista woman suffering from SUI in the selection of absorbent products.
