On 27 May 2019, we bid farewell to JózefPoklewski, a trusted Colleague and Friend, professor at theNicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) in Toruń. Born inKowalewo in the Vilnius Region, following WWII, orphanedby his father Władysław, he moved to Giżycko with his motherEmilia, with whom he felt a strong bond until the very lastdays. This was his individual feature: the long-lasting characterof and reliability in relationships. Following the studies inhistory of art at the University of Poznań, he became assistantlecturer at UMK, with which he was bonded throughout allof his academic and scientific career. He remained stronglyinfluenced by his teacher and mentor Gwidon Chmarzyński,professor at both universities. In his research Poklewski initiallyconcentrated on Baroque art (doctoral dissertation on theMarian Jesuit Sanctuary at Święta Lipka), gradually moreintensely focusing on the topic of the history of art and artisticlife, as well as education in art, history of art, and conservationin Vilnius (post-doctoral dissertation) and in Toruń. An appreciated and dedicated lecturer, at UMK JózefPoklewski performed the function of the head of theDepartment of the History of Mediaeval and ModernArt, and of the Director of the Institute of Monumentand Conservation Expertise; furthermore, he was theUniversity’s Senate member. Actively participating in thescientific life, he was tutor of graduate theses, as well asof doctoral dissertations, reviewing also post-doctoralones; moreover, he organized scientific conferences.Poklewski strongly committed himself to the activitiesof the Toruń Scientific Society and the Association of ArtHistorians (beginning from the Secretary, to the Presidentof the Toruń Branch, member of the Main Board, finallybecoming its Deputy President). Furthermore, he sat onMuseum Boards: at the National Museum in Gdańsk,District Museum in Toruń, and the Leon WyczółkowskiDistrict Museum in Bydgoszcz. Prof. Józef Poklewski diedin Toruń, and was buried there, too.
