On the 1st of. May 2015, in Meatpacking Districtof West Manhattan, the new building of the WhitneyMuseum of American Art was opened. It is the fourth locationof this well-known New York museum, which wasestablished in 1930, by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. TheWhitney possesses the world’s largest collection of Americanart and focuses on exhibiting living artists. Spectacular, industrialin character architecture signed by Renzo Piano hasmet with mixed reactions. The building is functional andwell connected with the post-industrial site, however, notappreciated by everyone. Similar situation happened fortyyears ago, when Centre of Georges Pompidou, designed byRenzo Piano and Richard Rogers, pioneers of high-tech architecture, was widely criticised. Only popularity, high attendanceand commercial success of famous Paris facilitychanged that negative opinion. Is the New Whitney followingthe same path – time will tell.
