On the 20th anniversary of the death of Professor Kazimierz Bassalik it is just the time to relate the story of the bacterial strain Pseudomonas extorquens isolated by him in 1913. The history of investigations on these bacteria in recent years is discussed. Attention is called to the lack of the description of the species extorquens in the latest edition of B e r g e y' s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (1974) and in P a l l e r o n i' s monograph (1978)
