Detailed investigations both numerical and experimental were performed on 38 samples of populations of three species of the genus Riccardia from the territory of Poland: R. latifrons, R. palmata and R. chamedryfolia. The intraspecific variability was found to be of genetic character in the first two species. The results gave ground to describe two new varieties: R. latifrons var. minor and R. palmata var. maior
