This article aims to identify, through theoretical analysis, the influence agglomerations have in the generation of firm externalities. Hence, the idea is established by demonstrating that productive clusters are different, although largely ignored in a vast number of articles and in the development of public policies; which can be identified by the various existing typologies (Pedersen, 1997, Van Dijk; Sverrisson, 2003, SUZIGAN 2006). The study was based on the theory of productive clusters and in national and international empirical papers. Consequently, we conclude the agglomerations do not have equal potential to generate externalities, rather, it is expected the contribution that companies can receive is dependent upon the characteristics of each. In addition, we propose a few approaches for companies, government agents and public policy makers.
