Systematic Desensitization: Empirical Evidence and Theoretical Issues

Las investigaciones sobre la desensibilización sistemática han perseguido en general dos grandes objetivos, en cierto modo complementarios. Algunas de ellas se han dedicado a averiguar l i eficacia de la técnica en su conjunto y, por los resultados obtenidos, puede concluirse que la desensibilización sistemática es un tratamiento eficaz para una gama amplia de problemas. Otras han pretendido esclarecer la aportación de cada uno de los elementos componentes a la eficacia de la desensibilización como un todo, y la conclusión parece ser que sólo existe un componente imprescindible: la expbsición a las situaciones ansiógenas. Las investigaciones sobre componentes han dado lugar a la formulación de diversas teorías sobre la desensibilización sistemática, que pueden agruparse en dos grandes categorías: teorías conductuales y teorías cognitivas.Investigations on systematic desensitization have pursued two main complementary goals. Some of them sought to test the efficiency of the technique as a whole. From the results we are able to conclude that systematic desensitization is a kind of efficient treatment suitable for a broad set of problems. Other investigations sought to evaluate the load of each element on the efficiency of systematic desensitization as a whole and it appears that there is only one main and necessary condition, this is, to be exposed to situations generating anxiety. Research undertaken about the elements of systematic desensitization gave rise to some theories about this behavioral therapy that can be clustered in two sets : behavioral theories and cognitive theories
