The purpose of this article is to show the results of an analysis done, from a student's and teacher's point of view, on the objetives of the physics laboratory at the university. From a sample of 128 students and another one consisting of 20 teachers, 20 possible objectives of physics laboratory were classified according to the importance that both students and teachers thought should be given to each of the suggested objectives, and on the importance which is being given to them at the moment. A contrastive study was also done of the results obtained from both samples, showing a high correlation in the ideal objectives of the laboratory and a consistent diagnosis in reference to the working situation at the moment.
