The concept "animal" and students' misconceptions of this term were analysed on a population of 365 individuals composed of students of 6th EGB, 1st BUP, COU and 3rd Teacher -training School from Salamanca and Soria in order to monitor the persistence of such misconceptions throughout the learning stage. The results obtained are compared with those found in a similar study previosly conducted in New Zeland, which is critically analysed as well. Some implications of this and other similar concepts in the teaching -learning process are also discussed.
