Temeljni ciljevi ovog rada jesu: ispitati faktorsku strukturu skalematerijalizma, razinu usmjerenosti građana Hrvatske premamaterijalizmu, utvrditi hijerarhiju vrijednosti i objasniti povezanostvrijednosti i materijalizma uz kontrolu sociodemografskihobilježja. The aim of this study is to check the factor structure of TheMaterial Values Scale, examine the orientation of Croatianresidents towards materialism, examine their basic humanvalue hierarchy, and to identify and explain the relationshipbetween values and materialism with control of sociodemographiccharacteristics. The survey was carried out on arepresentative sample of 1004 adult Croatian residents. Theshort version of The Material Values Scale (MVS) (Richins,2004) was applied for the materialism examination and theshort version of the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ)(Schwartz et al., 2001) was applied for the valueexamination. The results show that possession andacquisition of goods are mainly not important for Croatianresidents in terms of the main preoccupation in life, and, onaverage, they do not believe that consumption leads tohappiness. Croatian residents attribute more importance totradition, universalism and benevolence and less tostimulation and power. In terms of the relationship betweenvalues and materialism, it turned out that ten value typeswith control of socio-demographic characteristics explain16% of the total variance of happiness, as a first measureddimension of materialism, and 39% of the total variance ofcentrality as a second dimension of materialism
