Two novel Eu(II) complexes namely, Eu(tpy)2](NO3)2·2H2O (1) and [Eu(tpy)(NO3)2H2O] (2) were synthesized and their structures were determined by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility and conductivity measurements. The structures of the complexes were further determined by FT-IR spectroscopy and single X- ray diffraction crystallography. With X-ray diffraction crystallography, the structures of both were seen to be mononuclear but with different coordination environments.
The thermal analyses and luminescence behaviour of the complexes are reported. Fluoresence analyses of the two in crystal state were studied, at room temperature and 10 K. Examination of their luminescence nature confirmed both complexes showed antenna effect induction, which is as a result of ligand-to-ligand charge transfer.
