Leppe is one of the coastal villages the North Tabukan sub-district whose people mainly work as farmers and fishermen. Leppe’s fishermen are familiar with hand line fishing gear so called “Bawono” used to catch demersal fish with high economic value in the Sangihe Islands Regency including ornate threadfin bream, giant travely and grouper. Although this fishing gear is known to give a positive impact on the local fishermen's income, it hasn’t given similar contribution to our partner fishermen in the village. One of the reasons is high maintenance cost of “Bawono” fishing gear, whose materials mostly obtained from the Philippines. In particular, the one used to catch ornate threadfin bream requires high maintenance mainly because of the size of caught fish, rendering this fishing gear more prone to damage in the following fishing operations, desperately requiring transfer technology and stimuly. Hence, our team provided materials and trained the local fishermen in Leppe village to build 10 units of “Bawono” bottom hand lines. It is expected that through this community service, our fishermen partners can reduce their fishing operation production cost, be more productive and increase their fishing catch which in turn improve their standard of living.
