The research revealed the use of similes in Russian and English languages. There are many examples taken from the works of the famous writers compared with their translation in Russian. The translation losses were unavoidable due to some natural causessuch as lack of the equivalent or analogous simile in the Russian language, in which cases the translators resorted to other stylistically marked elements, namely to metaphors or metonymy. The second reason of translation losses lies in the fact of translators’ styleand preferences, as well as due to the difference in the structures of the two languages and the necessity to comply with the standards and norms of the target language. The article is written considering scientific research methods, novelty and actuality.
