The nature of the photographic image is discussed here, by considering the ways in which it represents aspects of reality within the phenomenological fundaments of the notion of sign. The purpose is to help build theoretical and methodological tools for analyses and improvement of perception on the cognitive influence of the photographic image. The pictures analyzed in this study have been supplied by Projeto Cognitus – Petrobrás.O caráter da imagem fotográfica é aqui discutido, tendo em conta os modos pelos quais ela representa aspectos da realidade no interior dos fundamentos fenomenológicos que sustentam a noção de signo. Busca-se a construção de um corpo teórico-metodológico que permita realizar procedimentos de análise e aprofundar a percepção a respeito da influência cognitiva da imagem fotográfica. As fotografias analisadas neste trabalho são provenientes de imagens cedidas pelo Projeto Cognitus – Petrobrás
