We present a general method to solve an optimal control problem for a free- boundary system associated with a continuous casting process. Firstly, we formulate the physical problem by using the enthalpy function of the system, which is a maximal monotone operator. By the introduction of the Yosida approximation, we obtain necessary optimality conditions. Then numerically, we use a gradient method. Finally some numerical results are presented for two cases of contraints.
