I n situ measurements of soil moisture at deeper layers is very difficult especially in heavy soils.Regression equations have, therefore, been developed to, estimate in the clear  season soil moisture variations at deeper layers rom fluctuation of soil moisture in the the surface layer. Estimated values are compared with observed ones. The estimates are seen to be reasonably accurate.
