The role of seismic arrays in continuous monitoring of seismicity

An array of sensitive short period seismometers established in 1965 near Gauribidanur has yielded valuable Information regarding the seismicity of the Deccan Plateau. This array has the advantage of Independent location of epicenters. It is the aim of this paper to present a summary of the findings of Gauribidanur array data regarding the distribution of epicenters up to a distance of about 400 km. In particular, we present also a summary of the observations of tremors coming from the Koyna region. The observed distribution of epicenters around Gauribidanur shows broad correlation with Some known structural features. The present work has also brought out that the Deccan plateau is still seismically active, Continuous monitoring, as has been made at GBA, is likely to lead to correlation of seismicity of fault, in relation to movement along faults and hopefully, the prediction of major earthquakes.
