Numerical experiments were performed to solve the balance equation for obtaining the stream function from the geopotential field. The balance-wind derived from the balance is then compared with geostrophic wind. It is observed that the computed balance-wind appears to be a better approximation to the observed wind field than the geostrophic wind derived from the observed geopotential.
