The generation and dissipation of kinetic energy by the mean meridional and zonal winds in the free atmosphere have been estimated for the Indian region during winter. It is found that kinetic energy is generated by meridional motion and consumed by zonal motion. The magnitudes of these are largest in the upper troposphere. The results are in general agreement with those found by Kung for the American continent.
