In the paper, a classification of various types of radar- weather echoes in tropics has been attempted. The different types of precipitation echoes have been categorised under the head-(l) Feature type, (2) Synoptic type and (3) Seasonal type. In order to be able to distinguish the real precipitation echoes from those due to super-refraction etc, the various types of non-precipitation  echoes have been described in the second part of the paper. Classification of radar echoes has been attempted with a view to provide guidance material to meteorologists in India in the identification and interpretation of radar-weather echoes. It is based on the data so fat collected in India and is likely  to be changed or  modified as more experience is gained.
