The author, currently professor at the School of Human Cultures, University of Shiga Prefecture, Hikone, Japan, teaches house design, carries out research leading to a theory on the spatial structure of human settlements in Japan, and parallely acts as a design advisor for human settlements as well as a practicing architect. Dr Doi, who was born in Yokohama, took his degrees as an architect-engineer - Bachelors, Masters, and Ph. D in engineering - from Kyoto University. He completed the Education Program provided by the Graduate School of Ekistics of the Athens Technological Organization, Greece, and studied at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), where his advisor was Professor Kevin Lynch. Prior to his present position, he was a member of the teaching staff, Department of Architecture, Kyoto University and a Professor of Architecture at the Akashi National College of Technology. Dr Doi has been a member of the World Society for Ekistics since 1986.
