FIALHO DE ALMEIDA E JOÃO DO RIO: PORTUGAL ENTRE RESSENTIMENTO E FASCÍNIO

Entre conto, crônica e reportagem, esses dois escritores registraram com intensidade dramática, às vezes mórbida (no caso particular de Fialho), a paisagem finissecular portuguesa (particularmente a de Lisboa nos interessa). Da pintura “algo baudelairiana da cidade”, com seus vícios e decadência, de Fialho, ao esforço de Paulo Barreto – o João do Rio – para promover a aproximação cultural luso-brasileira, resultam páginas em que o ressentimento que se evidencia a partir de um “olhar de dentro” e o olhar fascinado do viajante se mesclam na palavra de flanêur e dândi que circulam pela cidade e dela fazem o registro crítico e tantas vezes apaixonado. Abstract Caught between short story, chronicle and report, these two writers have registered with dramatic, sometimes morbid (particularly in Fialho’s case) intensity the end-of-thecentury landscape in Portugal, and specifically in Lisbon, which interests us the most. From Fialho’s “somewhat Baudelairian” depiction of the city, with its vices and decadence, to Paulo Barreto (João do Rio) and his effort in promoting cultural proximity between Portugal and Brazil, there results pages in which the resentment evident in an “insider’s look” and the fascinated view of the outsider mingle in the words of the flanêur and the dândi that roam about the city and make a critical, sometimes passionate register of it.
