Imam Shafi`i (150/767 - 204/820) was one of the most eminent Islamic scholars, prolific authors and an earlier jurisprudence and founder of shafi`i school of thought. He had made his great contribution in various religious disciplines including Islamic literature. He also produced writings in poetic form which fulfills the measurements of prosody. Though, he could not compose his own collection of poetry, yet his devotees extracted his poetic work from different writings. The collection of his poetry is named Diwan-e-Imam Shafi`i. His poetry is rich with wisdom, etiquette and ethical values which were abstracted and retrieved from the Holy Qur’an and Hadiths. Due to being quoted far and wide by different scholars, his poetry is acknowledged remarkable and holds prominent place in academia of scholars. This brief study seeks to reveal topics; self-denial, patience, contentment, Tawakkul, and self-pride which were significantly present in his poetry. This study is also undertaken in response to the deep sense of admiration and appreciation for the poetry of Imam Shafi`i.
