The environment harbors a wide variety of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites; along with toxic agents that could potentially damage the human body. Many microorganisms and their toxins have been responsible for big epidemics around the world. However, the human body is endowed with a protective shield called the immune system, which has evolved alongside microbes in a continuous battle to stop their invasion and the they bring. This paper describes the mechanisms integrated into the innate and adaptive immune responses to prevent, combat, eliminate and mount immune memory to different typesofpathogenicmicroorganisms.
