The diversity of communal configurations has made measurement an arduous task in sociological research. Tools that are useful in developed zones can be disappointing when they are applied in traditional communities. The development of instruments for measurement and analysis is one of the most pressing tasks for scientific research in general and for the social sciences above all. This is a problem for the studies of social capital, and for that reason, this study proposes an adequate methodology for its measurement in traditional (rural & indigenous) communities in the state of Oaxaca. The measurements reveal that social capital measured from a cultural point of view is an essential component of those communities, and at the same time, an element of communal life that is degraded as monetary relations take the place of the traditional links of cooperation.
