Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening medical emergency which requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Understanding the mechanism by which lack of insulin causes dehydration and acidosis is helpful in managing this condition. Numerous guidelines exist to improve management but adherence to guidelines is often poor.
