The article discusses traditions of constructing hydraulic structures on difficult terrain since ancient times. Features of the landscape and socioeconomic conditions on the territory of Tajikistan have led to the development of engineering structures here over the centuries from the simplest local building materials – stone, tree, clay. Despite the primitiveness of the building culture, the masters of the past could arrange large irrigation structures that allow transporting water over difficult terrain, arrange dams, distribution irrigation units and much more. Much of the experience of the past is still relevant today, especially in rural areas. Therefore, hydraulic engineering deserves close attention of modern researchers.
